What does it mean to communicate?
What does it mean to communicate? Is it more than just speaking? How so?
When we look at reading through the context of education, a concept often talked about is… Reading a book is not literacy, understanding it is. Given this frame of reference and then shifting to look through the lens of communicating, I wonder how we could change this statement if we risk to ponder…
Simply sharing words is not communication with someone… then what is ???????
Oftentimes we enter situations hopeful of communicating clearly and on some levels we even realize this needs to be done cooperatively…but how are we REALLY communicating and is it causing positive and uplifting connections with those around us?
While there is no precise method that will work with 100% accuracy, there may be some validity to breaking a few words down and simplifying our presence when seeking to communicate, be heard, and understood.
Connect – how you work on YOU to make this happen matters! Some studies say that your spoken word only accounts for 7% of communication…93% is non-verbal. If you want to break down the 93%… 38% of this is tone and volume, 55% is body language. There are numerous studies to google and learn on this topic, but the point here is that connections abound non-verbally! How can you positively position yourself, demeanor, and posture to connect with those around you? If it is a loved one, perhaps a gentle touch. If it is a defensive encounter, maybe a soft step or a scoot to the side with hands open, (indicating an attempt at an openness of heart and mind).
Collaborate – this involves risk! Are you willing to navigate yourself out of your comfort zone, compartmentalize your ideal way for a moment, and allow for all thoughts and ideas to be shared or expressed? We grow through collaboration. How can you listen more, lean into the perception of others, and learn through the process? Consider all perspectives!
Conquer – it is possible! Finding small victories in a variety of situations and venues will begin to happen. Perhaps you take an extra mindful breath (not a sigh;)…pull yourself together, join in the effort at hand, and impact change while communicating well!
Prioritize toward what you CAN accomplish
When energy and focus is not what you wish
Centering to develop more of your own inner gift
May enable you to inspire another’s needful shift
Find in all things the awaited beautiful
Your heart and mind will feel bountiful
What will you do to understand?
Will you willingly seek to expand?
Adapt your understanding and find more zeal
Try to lead others toward finding a fresh ideal
Regardless of your current view or perception
Be open to explore and discover new direction
Empower yourself and share with all those around
Enable hope and happy so greater good will abound!
This is just the beginning of a HUGE topic but one of paramount importance throughout all walks of life. Let’s continue the conversation and embrace opportunities to COMMUNICATE with CLARITY as we Connect, Collaborate, and Conquer a little more every day!
Simply sharing words is not communication with someone…what do YOU say it is?
